In case of old hardware in use additional efforts are required which are keeping busy a lot of vendors, for example: DialNow that uses VoIP internally but gives possibility to operate any kind of old phones hardware.

Third point is that VoIP calls between two VoIP clients are free (your only expense is internet usage). Payment is charged only in case of calling land or mobile phone. But even in this scenario calls are cheaper comparing to regular phone calls. So VoIP significantly reduces communication expenses. VoIP calls are tens to hundreds times cheaper then roaming. Cellular providers are perfectly aware of this issue and use VoIP internally that decrease prime cost of calls, thus increasing their profit. Must you pay for that? The answer is NO.

And the final point is usability. If you own modern smart phone (BlackBerry, Google Android, iPhone, Symbian, and Windows Mobile platform-based) you can activate VoIP within seconds and start using it simultaneously with cellular networks. When you dial you can choose the carrier you want to use: cellular or VoIP. You do not have to change your ways and habits of operating you phone. Just simply continue to use it.

Of course VoIP has its caveats. First of all you need an internet connection. Unfortunately it’s not always present, and some cellular providers have unacceptable data plans, especially when roaming takes place. Slow connection is the source of noticeable delays in voice, which significantly reduce quality of calls.

Also VoIP can not be used for emergency calls. This problem exists due to nature of the internet connections. VoIP server can not identify exact geographical location of client, thus can not redirect call to the proper local emergency service. Many vendors are already working on solving this issue. The most promising solution is to send GPS coordinates. And almost all modern phones can do that.

VoIP communications
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is adaptation of internet services for transferring media data, like audio (voice) and video. Internet is used as transport channel that connects two users without any limitations on their location.


First of all clients of VoIP telecommunication must register the phones in VoIP network. There exist free and commercial vendors that provide such a service. Registration fast and in most cases requires only e-mail, which receives registration details and configuration information.

Installation of proper software is required. You can choose among several vendors that offer almost the same services. As usual vendors allow limited or trial access to services. So it is up to end users to decide what vendor is preferable. Also there are several types of software: connecting PC-to-PC, PC-to-mobile and PC-to-phone. Only few vendors provide ability of mobile-to-mobile communication.

After registration in VoIP network and installing proper software you are ready to try it. You can verify connectivity by dialing special ECHO accounts, which just repeat your recorded voice with the small delay. Now you can try making calls to other VoIP users. In this case you should know their numbers or account IDs. To reduce complexity of initiating the connection, the international standard for VoIP was developed and applied. As a result, each internet phone number looks like well known e-mail address, e.g. "sip: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ". VoIP number can contain numbers and letters, must start with "sip:" protocol prefix and end with "@domain" suffix. Suffix depends on the server, which you‘ve chosen for the registration.

Some vendors have limitation on users’ ability to call to users, which are registered with other vendors. Most often it is a limitation of free servers. Commercial servers provide solution of this problem and have wider specter of connectivity options.

The process, when you dial another user VoIP phone number, shown on the figure N. One client connects to server and negotiate server for establishing connection with another client. If user on the other side is available and also connected to the server then call is performed. Server tracks whether client is "busy" or "offline" at the moment. That makes VoIP calls more interactive, because you can see status of the other users before dialing the actual number.
